Heading 1

Welcome to Hypnobirthing, an effective and enjoyable way to prepare your mind and body for your baby's birth. This course will provide you with a deep understanding of labour, help you to release any fears or anxieties that could cause tension and pain during labour, and equip you and your birth partner with the tools you need for a calm and confident birth. As you put your fears aside, you'll regain confidence in your body and in the birth process, so you are able to give birth from a place of trust and confidence, rather than a place of tension and fear. My own experiences in the births of my three children taught me the enormous power of the mind in childbirth. You can read more of my story here.

I trained as a Hypnobirthing practitioner with the Marie Mongan Hypnobirthing Institute more than 12 years ago, after using Hypnobirthing for the birth of my second child and being amazed at the results. Since then, I have also studied with the French obstetrician Michel Odent and the US midwife Ina May Gaskin. My studies in mindfulness and meditation have also deepened my understanding of the body-mind connection in childbirth. My experience of working with fathers-to-be inspired me to write The Calm Dad´s Guide to Birth, to help them embrace and understand their unique role as birth partner.

I have worked with hundreds of women and their partners over the years, and I am as passionate today about helping them prepare for a calm and positive birth experience as I was when I first started.

I hope you find all the information you need on these pages.

To understand how Hypnobirthing can help us, we first have to ask ourselves, what's wrong with childbirth? How can it be that a normal, physiological process that we've been doing for several million years, is so feared by women around the world? Well, it's probably not surprising given the messages that surround us. Few women will manage to get to adulthood without scary stories and images of childbirth being deeply imprinted on their minds. Pain, panic, screaming, ambulances - we rarely see anything positive. The images come from television, from movies, and from things that relatives, friends and neighbours tell us. We end up measuring labour in terms of pain and danger.

And when our moment finally comes, of course we're anxious! We tense up, waiting for the pain, hoping it's not too much for us, that we are able to bear it. And in this state, without intending to, we resist childbirth with all our strength. And our babies' births become an internal battlefield, between us and our own labour.

Of course, there's nothing wrong with labour. Childbirth is a beautifully designed process and a woman's body is perfectly designed to give birth. The problem lies in our minds, and in all the negative programming we've received around childbirth. Fear and anxiety have a devastating effect on the labour process and the result is pain and exhaustion.

When a woman gives birth without fear or tension, her body in a state of complete relaxation, the sensations of childbirth are very different. Free from stress and anxiety, she'll feel the enormous power of the uterine waves, but the muscles of the uterus remain relaxed and and work freely together, opening the cervix and pushing the baby down without resistance from the body. Where there is no resistance, there's no suffering.

Hypnobirthing prepares the birthing woman to easily achieve this relaxed state. It focuses on eliminating her fears around childbirth and helping her re-gain confidence in her body and in the process of childbirth itself. Through deep relaxation, breathing, and visualisations, the woman learns to quickly enter a state of deep relaxation. And, in this state, connected to the innate wisdom of her body, she can comfortably give birth.

How to eliminate fears and replace egative programming around childbirth with confidence and calm.

How you and your birth partner can create a calm and relaxed birthing space, free from stress and tension.

How to accept and welcome the enormous power of the uterine muscles rather than fear it.

The importance of the partner's role in the birth and how he/she can have a positive influence.

The physiology of labour and the interplay of hormones.

Gentle techniques that allow you to breathe your baby down rather than using forced pushing.

Deep relaxation techniques to help you eliminate the Fear-Tension-Pain cycle.

How to choose where to give birth and prepare your birth plan.

How we experience childbirth is important. Starting a new stage in life as a mother after experiencing childbirth in a positive and empowered way gives us confidence, as women and as mothers.

We don't need to prepare for a perfect birth or a pain-free birth (although your birth may well feel perfect to you, and you may well experience deep sensations that aren't pain). What we can prepare for is to not to resist the labour with our own bodies, to be able to let it flow and to be the birth that it is meant to be. Labour can be fast or slow, straightforward or with complications, and much of this is beyond our control.

However, there are many things that we can control. We can learn to control our thoughts around childbirth so that they don't become an obstacle. And we can control where we give birth and who accompanies us. In order to let go and trust, it is essential to be in a place where we feel safe, with people who respect us and listen to us.

Hypnobirthing gives us the tools and confidence control the things that we can control and to accept the things we can't. And so, we can give birth in a calm, confident and empowered way.
